Better Than The Oscars: Andy Samberg Spoofs Pearl Jam And Awards Shows
Who cares about all the Oscar's hype when the far superior and way funnier Spirit Awards just happened? The satirical awards show spoofs the consistently corny "in memoriam" reels every major awards show has. Remember John Legend's Grammy's performance? Me neither.
In the Spirit fashion, celebrities who are still (some surprisingly) alive were honored, and the likes of John Legend were replaced with Andy Samberg as Eddie Vedder, with his version of Pearl Jam's "Alive." It was awkward, sloppy, hilarious, and everything that it should have been.
In flannel and a cheap wig not nearly as luscious as Vedder's real locks were (RIP), Samberg sang his "non-memoriam" rendition of "Alive", spotlighting Spirit Awards attendees like Matt "Mattie D-Bones" Damon, Tim Allen, and Haille Steinfeld, noting that each person was "still alive." He also apologized to Pearl Jam, which was in fact necessary by the end of the performance.
With Fred Armisen faking death on camera and Samberg sending a clichéd tribute tweet on stage for his brief mourning period, this bit was full of cheap laughs that we all really need right now, let's be honest.
