Red Hot Chili Peppers - Dark Necessities
- Dark Necessities -
The intro build on this song is epic, starting with bass and guitar, adding piano subtly at first, then the kit as it all crescendos, and one big reverse cymbal to bring it into that classic Red Hot Chili Peppers funk groove.
You gotta love the clap in the verse where you would expect the snare to hit! It perfectly punctuates the bass riff. The wah guitar glitch is a really cool piece of ear candy at 1:12, and makes for a cool entry for the palm muted guitar line in the verse.
Anthony Kiedis' chorus vocals are such an ear worm. You're guaranteed to be humming the melody and singing about how dark necessities are part of your design for weeks to come!
The bridge on this song is a welcomed 3rd section with its piano feature and descending bass and guitar lines. A good bridge is underrated, and the subtle role this one plays is a great example of why; it's brief and seamless with the rest of the track, but adds a completely new structure to an already captivating song. When the drum fill introduces the next verse, it feels fresh and not at all repetitive, thus the magic of the bridge.
The outro on this song is the final gem to this track. The guitar riff propels it along and you catch yourself singing along with the "ahh-hhh"s right to the finish.
